The Manx Telecom Acoustic Stage - IOM & MGP GuitarFest 3/4/5 September 2009

The Manx Telecom Acoustic Stage is an innovation at GuitarFest 2009.

Thanks to the generous support of Manx Telecom, the Acoustic Stage will be a forum for local acoustic guitarists (comprising all styles of guitar playing) and visiting support acts to entertain the Manx public free of charge in the newly opened Villa Marina Arcade – further details are below

The Manx Telecom Acoustic Stage will take place in the Villa Arcade on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons of GuitarFest. There will be 30 minute slots available for local acoustic/electro acoustic guitar players (25 minute set, 5 minute turnaround).

It is expected that Friday afternoon’s slots will be filled by young guitarists recommended by local music teachers.

The Saturday and Sunday afternoon will be a combination of local guitarists/guitar acts selected by JonnoPromotions and recommendations. This is also an opportunity for local guitar players to put themselves forward for consideration.

Approximate schedule is below (timings may be subject to change).

Friday from 12 noon to 5pm slots for up to 10 local guitarists, followed by a 45 minute set from Amrit Sond.

Saturday from 12 noon to 5pm slots for up to 10 local guitarists, followed by a 45 minute set from Pete Smith & Roger Inniss.

Sunday from 12 noon to 4pm slots for up to 8 local guitarists, followed by a 45 minute set from Michael Berk.

Contact Jonno on acousticstage@manx.net if you are interested in performing on the Manx Telecom Acoustic Stage at GuitarFest 2009!!!

Jerry Donahue of The Gathering to host guitar workshop while on the Isle of Man

Jerry Donahue at Peter Norris Music, Finch Road, Douglas - Sunday 28th June at 12 noon.

Jerry is a world famous country/folk/rock player who is a member of the Hellecaster trio and is known as the King of Single and Double String Bending (he's also a really nice guy!).

He will be playing his Peavey Omniac JD signature series Electric Guitar, demsonstrating his string techniques and talking about his gigging life on both sides of the Atlantic.

As this event is being supported by Peavey and by Peter Norris Music there is no admission charge

So come along a week on Sunday for a great time with a truly great Guitarist!

BIOGRAPHY

From his early days in such bands as Fotheringay and Fairport Convention, to notable performances and/or recordings with Gerry Rafferty, Robert Plant, Joan Armatrading, Johnny Hallyday, George Harrison, Cliff Richard, Chris Rea, Warren Zevon, Bonnie Raitt, Hank Marvin, Roy Orbison, Nancy Griffith, The Yardbirds, and The Hellecasters, Jerry epitomizes the consummate guitarists' guitarist.

The son of the late 1940s/50s Big Band leader Sam Donahue and TV and film actress, Patricia Donahue, brother of the late Marc Donahue, and father of singer/ songwriter Kristina Donahue, Jerry has combined the Celtic folk music of his adopted home in the UK with his American rock, blues and country roots to arrive at his own, unique, unmistakable style.

Matt Pegg to play bass for the Gathering on Saturday 27th June 2009

Matt Pegg is the son of Fairport Convention and Jethro Tull bass guitar player Dave Pegg.

He is an experienced bass player and has been known to stand in for his father on Jethro Tull tours. He has recorded with Francis Dunnery, Ian Brown and Chris Difford.

He appeared on Dunnery's "Man" album in 2001, and toured with him on his Hometown tour.

Since 1993, Matt has been a member of the group Procol Harum; touring with them regularly and appearing on their "The Well's on Fire" album and "Live at the Union Chapel" DVD.

Sadly, Rick Kemp of Steeleye Span is not able to perform with The Gathering on this occasion due to illness. However, Matt is a top-class bassist and has played with The Gathering on numerous occasions.

Steve Gibbons Band TT Tour 2009 - Change of Venue

PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF VENUE

On Tuesday afternoon, JonnoPromotions received information that the licence applications by the South Douglas Old Friends Association relating to the long anticipated Steve Gibbons Band TT Tour 2009 events scheduled to take place on Thursday 4th, Sunday 7th and Thursday 11th June, had been rejected by the latest licensing hearing.

After discussions with the Douglas Police Alcohol Unit and the management of the Old Friends, it was decided that a “dry” venue was the only option and it was agreed that this would not be appropriate for these events.

So with grateful thanks to the Sefton Group, and Steve Harding, the manager, the two concerts scheduled for Thursday 4th and Sunday 7th of June have been relocated to Paramount City, located at the far end of Queens Promenade.

Paramount’s management is sensitive to the audience for this event and have kindly agreed to make some extra seating available in the venue. They will be selling bitter and stout (in bottles and cans) in addition to their normal range of draft and bottled lagers, spirits and soft drinks.

Doors will open at 8pm and the gig will start at 9pm. Last orders will be at 00.30 and the venue will close at 01.00. All tickets for the Old Friends gigs will be honoured on the door at Paramount. Refunds will be available if required.

Jonathan “Jonno” Gollow of JonnoPromotions, who is promoting this event in association with Sure Radio TT, regrets any inconvenience caused to SGB fans and hopes all ticketholders will come down to the newly refurbished and redecorated Paramount City and enjoy the event. “The situation was completely outside my control as this was caused by a technical issue relating to the licence at the Old Friends Club” he noted “but, thanks to Steve Harding at Paramount City, all is not lost and all of us Steve Gibbons fans can enjoy an excellent gig, albeit at a slightly different venue than the one we were planning!”

At present a venue has not been finalised for the gig on Thursday 11th June but it is expected that another venue in Douglas will host the final concert of Steve’s mammoth Up Close and Personal TT Tour 2009.

Gráinne Duffy Band at Peel Centenary Centre

Saturday April 11 7.30 for 8pm start.

After releasing her debut album, 'Out of the Dark', in November 2007, Grainne has been receiving some of the best praise an artist could ever ask for.

In England the buzz has certainly started with Classic Rock commenting 'In a world of chick rockers, Duffy is the real deal. Label bosses get your cheque books out sharpish'. While Guitarist devoted a whole front page to the artist saying her debut album boosts 'bluesy Americana from Ireland with genuine worldwide potential', adding what they love most about her is that she has a 'husky voice and plays a mean blues guitar'.

Guitar Techniques continued this well deserved praise commenting 'she plays with both style and feel' and is a 'thoughtful and melodic guitarist', 'her playing is bursting with personality'. Aside her guitar playing it seems Grainne's voice and songwriting have been drawing in fans far and wide.

Recently Grainne was approached by the BBC to offer her original take on the Oletta Adams cover 'Get Here if you Can' which is currently featured in their advertisment on BBC1 and BBC2 promoting programming on Monday nights on BBC.

The track was recorded in none other than The Beatles producer George Martin's renowned Air Studios in London, featuring the talents of former Eric Clapton drummer Ian Thomas, ex Van Morrison and Madonna bassist Steve Pearce, James Hollowell, currently working with David Gray, on Hammond and Piano and Richard Ashcroft's sideman Adam Philips on guitar.

Following on from such Grainne appeared at Glastonbury 2008 with her band on the acoustic stage alongside Joan Baez, Suzanne Vega, Sinead O Conor, Seasick Steve, Glen Hansard and The Blockheads. This year she has performed as opening act to Robben Ford and The Yardbirds.
